Dog food recall: Jr. Texas Taffy Pet Treat

January 31st, 2011 02:00:00 pm

Merrick is starting 2011 with a bang - it just announced another recall. This time, it’s the Jr. Texas Taffy pet treat. These jerky pet treats may be contaminated with salmonella. All Jr. Texas Taffy treats are being recalled as a safety precaution.

Salmonella can affect both animals that eat these treats and people who handle the contaminated products. Anyone who has these treats should immediately stop giving them to their dogs and make sure to wash their hands after touching.

Dogs who get the salmonella virus may have the following symptoms:

• Fever
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Diarrhea (may be bloody)
• Decreased appetite
• Abdominal pain

Pets that eat these treats but do not show signs of salmonella may not show these signs but can still carry the infection and pass it on to other pets or people. If your dog has been exposed to these treats and is showing any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.

People who get the virus may experience similar symptoms. Salmonella in humans can lead to additional and more serious illnesses, so if you have handled Jr. Texas Taffy treats and show symptoms contact your doctor.

These treats were shipped to retailers across the U.S. If you have purchased these treats, return whatever you haven’t used to the store of purchase for a full refund. For any questions, contact Merrick at 1-800-664-7387 anytime between 8am and 5pm Central Standard time, Monday through Friday
