Every Wednesday we do what we call Yahoo training. This isn’t how we train all the time. The basics of obedience and bitework are taught a little at a time and the dogs are gradually exposed to more and more environmental and decoy pressures. When the dogs have reached a certain level of training, we start them in Yahoo. This Yahoo training is essentially environmental proofing.
We started yahoo training years ago to proof our dogs and it has evolved into a regular Wednesday morning event. We have loads of fun training this way and we always keep things positive and fun. I have traveled to (and been in) other clubs and have seen training get stale and tedious. Yahoo is our way of keeping training fresh and enjoyable while we throw every environmental stressor we can think of at our dogs.
Yahoo training always seems to keep raising the bar for the club members and the quality of our dogs. If someone sent their dog across a lake for a bite on a decoy in a canoe this week, rest assured the other club members will be trying it next week usually with a new twist. This kind of friendly, “Anything your dog can do, mine can do better!” mentality keeps both dog and handler challenged.
We do Yahoo training in obedience bitework and agility with many different breeds. As the training director it is my job to make sure everyone has fun while reaching his or her training goals. We always try to stay safe and make sure the dogs end with success!
