Well, just to put the cherry on top of my day, my boyfriend's grandpa died this morning and an old family friend back in Arizona was shot and killed.

=( Hopefully there is some good news at some point today.

Tested for Lyme, Ehrlichia, ANA (Anaplasma phagocytophilum?) and it also covered heart worms. It came back negative. It doesn't cover Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which is second here only to ehrlichia. Because the test for that is over $50 and the doxycycline script was only $17, she went ahead and prescribed it to try it. They'll call tomorrow to make sure it doesn't upset his stomach and I'm supposed to call her on Friday and let her know how he is doing.

If this doesn't work, we'll move onto to the OSU neurologist and vet there.

I'm not sure whether to be happy or disappointed that you didn't find an answer today. Regardless, you got rid of some possibilities and that's good.

I'm honestly kind of disappointed. =( I was hoping for a solid answer. We'll see how he does over the next few days. =\

Hopefully by some twist of fate, this fixes it. Because I honestly can't spend much more on vet visits. =( I'm scraping along financially as it is.

I am sorry that Toby isn't feeling well. I know how it feels to not have an answer about a dog who is having issues but you just have to try and hang in there. If money is an issue talk to your vet and see if they accept CareCredit. Some vets will also allow you to write two checks, each for 1/2 of the costs and wait a few weeks before cashing the second one. Obviously if your vet is familiar with you they are probably more likely to do such a thing.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and Toby.

Is there any chance that he got into something? Poison or something somewhere?

I'm just grasping at straws as to a medical reason for this sudden change in behavior. Sounds an awful lot like herding breeds with MDR-1 gene reactions to drugs (ivermectin, etc). Do you use Heartgard for heartworm, or use immodium or ace? I know there are mixes that don't look like herding dogs that have had reactions.

We do use ivermectin for worming, but have his whole life and never had a problem with it. I don't know how long this sort of reaction takes, but he wasn't wormed close to Feb 17th, when it all seemed to start back then. He gets it every few months.

This evening he is much more playful, much more himself. I'm worried that maybe he picked up something from the ticks a couple of weeks ago and it hasn't been long enough for him to get a positive result. She said that tick cases this year are already double what they see for the whole year on average. And that maybe his sudden onset of obviously not feeling well isn't related to his behavior.

Thanks for the support everyone. I'll definitely keep you updated as things progress.

As of tonight, Toby has eaten and seems to feel better. Wagging his tail a whole lot more. Still not quite his normal self.

Hand fed Toby half of his breakfast today before he was willing to eat on his own. Then gave him a piece of ham with his pills folded up inside of it. Ate that like a champ. He's wagging his tail, being a little more himself today. Probably won't be until this weekend that I have Allen come over while Toby in his crate with a super awesome frozen kong to see how he does. Definitely don't want to rush either of them into anything. I don't even plan on letting Toby out for the first reintroduction.

Pushed Allen's visit back to Sunday instead of Friday. Considering a walk this evening around campus since it's a ghost town right now.

Toby has been super hyper this evening, so I took him for a short stroll around campus. He did great! We didn't run into anyone, everyone was a very nice distance away and Toby walked by my side and seemed to enjoy the entire thing!

Had two friends stop by for a few minutes. Such a tiny house, Toby inevitably saw them from his crate. Barked at the girl, was fine with the guy. Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. The guy gave him a treat in his crate and sat by him. Totally fine. The female went to do it, and he ate the treat, but immediately got up and turned away from her, obviously uncomfortable.

FML.

The real test is if he is still nice to Allen anymore. He's never been nice to someone once he's barked at them...

In my opinion, you need to make sure he is left alone at all times when he is in his crate. Dogs are very cornered in their crates and having people approach them can be very intimidating. Also, (again, just my opinion) you need to stop trying to have him interact with people. A lot of dogs will take treats from people, but are still freaked out because the person is so close and will occasionally lunge after eating the treat. Every time he "practices" the behavior of barking/lunging at a person, he gets better at it and it becomes more ingrained. If you're going to do anything, I would recommend having YOU treat him when other people are around. But in all honestly, I think you need to take about 45 steps backwards and just work on relaxation exercises with him and bonding exercises for the two of you. Make sure his trust in you is implicit. Let him stop worrying about other people as much as possible.

Oyi... I'm sorry you and Toby are going through such a difficult time right now.
How old is he again?

You might want to read some of my very old posts about Mick... he was extremely HA, so I know exactly how you feel.
I also agree w/Liz when it comes to people approaching Toby while he's crated - Mick couldn't/wouldn't tolerate that, ever, and he chose *fight* every time since he obviously didn't have a chance to retreat (*flight*) in his crate. He was also way more reactive when on-leash or muzzled, but he finally learned to tolerate wearing a muzzle w/out freaking out after months of work/training.
Mick had to be managed carefully on a 24/7 basis... it IS do-able, but it's a ton of work in the long-run, and it requires a lot of compromises, commitment, and love - which you all seem to be willing to tackle.

Hang in there! :hug3:
