Right . . . different methods work on different dogs, different people have different experiences, different people give different advice and different people have different opinions.

Did I miss some forum rule about disagreeing with people? :|

Oh, don't be so sure....

Men are trained NOT to go to the doctor just out of fear of those exams...

I am trained to avoid OBGYNs for the same reason.

Or maybe if you like that sort of thing......

I'm jumping in late here but I wanted to throw this in concerning the use of punishment.

Continuing to apply punishment without any noticeable change in the dog's behavior isn't training, it's abuse.

That is coming from the man who brought the clicker into the dog world. (Incidently, he will be at the bullympics  )

I use aversion with my dogs but the above statement causes me to think about what works and what doesn't when I'm trying to correct them.

I just wanted to throw this out there.

Absolutely. Unless you have a bull terrier, then they get 5-6 tries. They are VERY stubborn ;-)

In closing, it seems to be the consensus I believe
Gatsu- Walk that little girl around outside and make her go poo before she comes back in the house. What was her routine like before she started this naughty behavior? Did she go twice a day? Three times a day? Just get her back on a schedule and if you think you know how many times she should be going poo everyday, just make sure she does it. Then she has less of a chance of doing it in your room.

Jen, that was kinda my point with it....I used it short-term so that I could use praise to teach them what was right....

Apparently in the beginning of the thread our method was BAD, but now it is our choice? :|

Ah well. I still haven't heard any other options on how else to handle all the problems Tess had, all at the same time, so I guess I did alright by her.

There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

All people have to go on is experience...more than once I've felt like one person put's down another person's methods just because they are not the ones that worked with his/her dog.

The thing to remember is this: people base knowledge upon experience. When we say things on this board, we likely say them because it has worked for us (or we know someone for whom it has worked). It's NOT gospel. If you don't like what someone suggests, then don't do it...but don't bash it either....every dog is different. It's important to find what works for you AS WELL AS what you feel comfortable doing...

Jen, your suggestions were based on what you have seen work....I commend you for trying to tackle all the issues.... :P

To address the original poster (no way am I getting into the matchstick debate!), here is what I have done with my dogs:

To go outside: Both Brutus and Aidan run around my yard like lunatics before they poop. It's like they wind themselves up or something. They also sniff around to find the "perfect" spot. So the walk will probably be a good idea to stimulate the bowel movement.

Crate training: I tried the squirt bottle method to get Brutus to stop barking, but I really don't think it works at all. He began to hate the crate and it was hard getting him in there. Now if he barks I just ignore him completely. Once he realizes he isn't getting any attention (positive or negative), he stops barking and goes to sleep. He will still occasionally get riled up if there is a lot of activity near his crate, but that is to be expected.

Hope this helps, and good luck! :)
