List of standard commands/hand signals?

This forum is all about training and behavior. Everything from potty training to working titles!

Postby pitbullmamaliz » February 7th, 2010, 7:18 pm

I somehow volunteered myself to compile a list of standard training commands/hand signals for the shelter I volunteer at. I was saying that we need to have everybody using the same words/signals, and the guy in charge of the training teams said, "you want to do that?" lol Alright!

So I know I could obviously come up with this on my own but I'm wondering if anybody knows of a list I might be able to steal. It just needs to be very basic - several of the volunteers barely know how to hook a leash on.

Thanks for any help!

lol I feel so mean saying that, but it's true! I know not everybody is going to be as into learning everything possible about dogs and training, but one lady constantly talks about her "alpha dogs" and the "submissive" dogs. Everybody is so nice but clueless.

I can send you a copy of the Fidos list...it's pretty basic...and you can change the words to anything you need, and take out stuff you don't need (fetch, tug, etc).

I still have two books to put in the mail to you...;) hopefully I can get out the Post office tomorrow...I'll pop a copy of the commands in the mail, unless I get them typed up tonight on PBT.

OR whenever you get a chance later on... I'd be interested to learn them as well. :)

Right now we have two... flat, outstretched hand means "wait."
Index finger pointed at a dogs head means "I'm-about-to-kill-you-deader-than-a-door nail-if-you-don't-settle-down-RIGHT-NOW!"

We somehow make those work. lol

We have that same signal. I thought that was a mandatory signal all dog owners have.

Liz, I got them...the first page has a full list of commands...it was a Schutzhund place, so it has the commands in English, German, and Japanese (the preferred language of that trainer) - but it also has a description of what you should expect for each command...

Then, the second page has hand signals (the signals are paired with the German command, but it's easy enough to figure out which one is which b/c you have the first page)...

If anyone else wants these, PM me your email addy and I'll send them (I scanned them, so I don't want to try to attach them b/c I'd have to make them smaller/lower their quality)...

Sounds like we could almost trade dogs and they'd have no problem understanding the commands LMAO

"come" followed by stepping towards the dog is a combination verbal/body signal that means "if you don't come to me before I get to you, you're in deep deep doo doo"

Yeah, with weird little herding dogs, this means lots of calming signals, and frantic avoidance techniques to get away from scary mom...and makes my recalls worse in the long run...lol
