So holy crap, I just talked to Sarah Kalnajs on the phone. I don't know if any of you have ever seen her stuff but her 2 DVD's have taught me so much about dogs and their body language. Here's the link to her website: http://www.bluedogtraining.com/videos-dvds.html

Anyway, I'm one of her Facebook friends and I had asked her a question on there regarding resource guarding, and she just gave me her phone number and told me to call her! We chatted for about 15 minutes. I tried not to sound like too big of a dork but it was so cool talking to her!

I just had to tell somebody 'cause I'm so psyched about it! Yes, I'm a dork! lol

Yes, I am absolutely star struck and a celebrity FB stalker!

Christine, she had said in her DVD that dogs who have lowered heads and necks are resource guarding, but all the clips she showed were dogs that were RG'ing their kibble. So I couldn't see what I was looking for, as obviously their heads and necks were down because they were eating. I was confused. But she explained that just as we might hover more closely (like, more directly over) our food if somebody tries to take it, dogs do the same thing. They'll be more directly over it, and they may or may not be eating. She also said that if you see a dog with lowered head and neck, it is probably guarding something - whether it's the tissue on the ground, or the space itself.

She did then add that you have to take the whole body into account - a dog whose body is wiggling with joy and has happy tail swings probably isn't guarding. I told her it's tough figuring out which body part I should check first, and she laughed and said you get good at glancing at the whole body at once before zeroing in on certain parts.

Then we talked about her dogs, and her traveling, and the book she's writing, and what a dumbass I am for not seeing her when she was doing a seminar in Cleveland (I said dumbass, not her!), etc. We just had a lovely, educational chat. She also said that she hates watching those DVD's she made as they weren't originally for the general public. She's a perfectionist and had they been for the general public she said she would have changed lots of things. So she's actually re-doing the Language of Dogs.

She's very down to earth and friendly. I just hope I didn't sound like the dork I think I sounded like! lol

Liz-
You've probably forgotten me (I lurk here, but I'm pretty active over at clickersolutions). I have Vanya, the noisy young pittie who sounds very similar to Inara in many ways. When I read your descriptions of the relax class, I think: oh, you're a braver woman than I am. Anyway, Vanya has a private session with Sara Kalnajs of Blue Dog in two weeks, to socialize with her dogs and work on his leash reactivity. Neat! We're very excited. I'll let you know if she's as cool in person as she is in her workshops.

(And I sat at a table next to Patricia McConnell once at the university! Woo hoo! She didn't know I was there, but I still got to admire her from close up)
