How would I train this?

I'm pretty sure I can get Inara to grab her tail because if I scritch her bum in just the right spot she nibbles on her tail, but how do I get her to hold it and come towards me? I just think this is super cute!

Baby steps my dear. :D

I'd start with clicking for a curve towards the tail, then maybe a nose touch? Teach her to nose target something, then stick it on her tail? Then raise the criteria to putting her mouth around it. Basically, train it like you'd train any type of retrieve...just the turning to get the tail would be non-retrieve part.

I saw a video of Debi Davis' BC service dog at Clicker Expo...he'll retrieve and hold his own back leg...(lying down). I started with Score...but kinda forgot that I was working on that until now...lol. I've also been slowly working on having Score retrieve my hands.

Sorry, I had a beer tonight...now I'm rambling. :wave2:

I'd think it'd be easier if the dog had more hair ?
I can only please one person per day. Today is not your day, tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Blah blah blah, baby steps. Are you saying I shouldn't use the butt-scritch to get her curved towards her tail? She'll target my hand but I haven't tried to teach her to target something else, especially something that would stick to her tail! lol

So once I have her touching her tail consistently, I would then withhold the click until she got frustrated and mouthed it, right?

Yup, that's what I'm saying. I'd try a piece of duct tape...make a little star with it...and wrap the ends back onto themselves, so the middle is sticky in the back. That's what we do for flyball...so the owners can stick the tape ANYWHERE...so the dog learns to hit anything with paws. The same can be done with nose touches...(you can also work on heeling this way, by sticking the tape on your pants). This way you could stick it on her tail when the time comes...and duct tape comes in soooo many colors! ;)

I'm afraid that she'd be thinking about butt scritches too much to pay attention to what the click was for...but you know her better than I do. Score *might* get it, but I think the rest of my gang would just be enjoying the scritches. 8)
