Branford (WTNH) - 8 newborn puppies are alive today thanks to two Branford police officers who got curious and asked a man 'what's in the cooler'.

The puppies are resting comfortably in New Haven Central Animal Hospital, a far cry from where they were Wednesday night.

Branford Officer Philip Ramey and Officer Joseph Peterson were doing surveillance by the Branford Motel on Route 1 when "I saw a gentleman walking towards the All Pets Club parking lot with a cooler in his hand," Officer Ramey said.

When Officer Ramey stopped the man walking down the street and asked him what was in that airtight cooler, the answer surprised him.

"When he opened it up I saw that there were 7 or 8 newborn puppies inside," Officer Ramey said.

Where he was going with the dogs remains a mystery. He didn't give the police a straight answer, and even lied, telling the officer the puppies' mother was dead. The mother, wearing a tag named 'Jazz', was in fact alive and inside his motel room.

The dogs were all confiscated and given emergency care.

Police "were very concerned about the potential health problems," hospital director Ken Aldrich said. "They brought them in and relayed the story of how they found them."

After a series of physical exams, the mother and her 8 puppies are safe, in accommodations much bigger than a cooler and much warmer than a chilly December night.

"We've got 8 puppies who seem to be healthy and happy and we've got a mom who is feeding them and doing great," Aldrich said.

"I think the efforts between the Branford police department and our work, it's just wonderful to see them doing well during the holiday, and it just gives everyone a good feeling."

No charges have been filed for the man with the dogs. Police said those are pending a review.

The puppies will be nursed back to optimum health at the Branford Animal Shelter for the next 8-12 weeks before they are put up for adoption.
