Computer question

How do I know if my computer is dying a slow painful death, or if I just have really crappy DSL?

My laptop is about 6 or 7 years old and overheats unless I literally keep a fan blowing directly on it and keep it elevated. It's a dinosaur. But just recently my browser has begun to DRAAAAAAAG, to the point where the PBT home page may sometimes take a minute (literally) or more to load. Chrome takes FOREVER to open up. I usually open it once, let it work for a minute, close it, reopen it and then it will work. Other programs don't seem to be slow to open, but Chrome drives me crazy. It will freeze up for a minute here or there, or just think for way too long about opening pages.

I'm leaning towards this being a crappy DSL problem, but I also know that a senior computer like mine is going to inevitably slow down.

Thoughts?

It sounds like you may have a virus or something eating up most of your connection.

Might also try defragmenting the hard drive. It'll take a long time, so you'll want to set it to go overnight or while you're gone.

Just for the record I meant to say cable modem, not DSL, not that it makes a difference.

I have AVG and Super Anti-Spyware and they haven't caught anything, but when I get home tonight I'll let them each run a full scan. I'm pretty good about defragmenting on a regular basis but I'll do that, too.

What type of computer do you have? My daughter just told me she has to download a program to make her internal fan run more often because her laptop is getting too hot too.

I did a Google search and found that apparently your type of laptop has overheating issues. Have you ever taken it apart and cleaned the fans? I read where one guy said he downloaded the owner's manual and followed it to clean his fans (there are three fans in there). He also said it was very easy to do.

It's sounds to me like some of the issues you are experiencing are directly related to the computer overheating. Your processor is getting too hot. Your processor could also be going bad.

There are also laptop cooling pads that you can purchase to keep your laptop cooled off.

I bought a cooling stand with extra fans to place under my laptop and it didn't work. I believe the overheating issues. This bastard gets hot to the point of literally burning my legs if I don't balance it right on the insides of my legs so air can flow easily. I bet the fans are probably filthy from sucking up animal hair for a bunch of years. Hmm. Might be time to clean them.
