Dog owners 'on board' with rules

The Independence City Council praised its citizens last night for compliance with the city's dangerous dogs ordinance.

"I really want to applaud our citizens for what they have done," said Mayor
Don Reimal, after it heard a staff report from the Independence Animal Control Division. "It shows our citizens can come here and speak their minds, but they still got on board with what is decided."

Last August, the council voted to ban pit bulls in the city. Owners of pit bulls could keep their animals if they were registered before Oct. 21, 2006. Aimee Wells, manager of the Independence Animal Shelter, said more than 400 pit bulls were initially registered. Several have left the city since, and there are currently 395 registered pit bulls in the city.

Even with the ordinance, people have tried to bring the animals into the city. Authorities have picked up 77 pit bulls throughout the city since the ban came into effect. Also, 96 pit bulls have been surrendered to the city.

There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.
