WHEN Natalie Wells bought a home in Englewood, N.J., a year ago, she was unaware that her American pit bull terrier was illegal to own in the city.
Shortly after moving in, she was told by one of her daughters about a city law that banned the breed, commonly called pit bulls, along with several similar breeds and Rottweilers. Under the 1999 law, even this yearâ€™s best-in-show winner at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Rufus, a colored bull terrier from Holmdel, N.J., would be banned in Englewood.
â€œI pretty much knew in my gut it wasnâ€™t right,â€
