The Texas Department of State Health Services and Wise County animal control officials are trying to locate two pit bull puppies sold in mid-March from a pickup in the parking lots of the Wal-Mart Supercenter and the Tractor Supply Co. in Decatur.
The two, from a litter of eight, are being sought because one of the other puppies in the litter developed rabies, which was confirmed by DSHS laboratory testing May 19.
Authorities said it is likely the rabid puppy was exposed to rabies after being sold, but added that they cannot rule out pre-sale exposure.
Authorities have accounted for six of the original eight. None of the six has developed rabies.
Anyone who has one of the two puppies or knows where they might be should contact the Wise County Sheriff's Department at (940) 627-5971, extension 237, or the Arlington DSHS office at (817) 264-4923.
Rabies is almost always fatal in humans once symptoms occur. But a series of post-exposure shots can prevent rabies if given in time.
