BRIDGEPORT -- Police shot and killed a pit bull when they said the dog's owner ordered it to attack officers following a chase on the Route 25/8 Connector.

The dog's owner, Rashad Young, 30, of Hyatt Avenue, Norwalk, was charged with threatening, reckless endangerment, breach of peace, interfering with police and risk of injury to a minor. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.

Police received a call that a car was chasing a woman last Saturday in the area of Chopsey Hill Road. When officers arrived at the scene, witnesses told them the woman had driven away but was being pursued by another car on the highway.

Officers managed to overtake the two cars, police said, and forced Young to pull over. But as officers walked toward the car, police said Young let loose a large gray-and-white pit bull named June that charged Officer David Uliano.

Police said Uliano managed to fire one shot that hit the dog, but his gun misfired as the dog leapt on him. Officer Jason Amato then fired at the dog, causing the animal to release its grip on his partner.

But as officers were handcuffing Young, police said the dog again lunged at Uliano and officers fired at it four more times before it fell to the ground.

As Young was being led in handcuffs past his dog's body, Young allegedly exclaimed: "You guys use those [expletive] Shepards, see what a real dog does."

Two adults and two young children were in the car that Young had been pursing, police said. Young apparently got into a dispute with the man at a children's birthday party and then pursued them from that gathering, police said.
