We heard from concerned residents in Beardstown that lots of stray dogs were on the loose. We heard the problem was so bad, residents who often walk, cary clubs or sticks to ward off vicious dogs. We talked to Cass County Animal Control for ome answers.

Trayce Johnson with animal control told us on average she picks up one stray dog each day. Johnson says the *type* of dog is part of the problem. Pitbulls, Pitbull mixes and other dangerous dogs are often picked up.

That's why the Cass County Board approved a resolution to control dangerous dogs.

The document says any stray dog deemed dangerous under the Illinois Animal Control Act will cost the owner $500.

Repeat offenders can pay up to $1,500.

The board hopes this will help cut down on the amount of strays.

The ordinance took effect August 1.
