PROVO — A Provo police officer was attacked by a pit bull Thursday evening as he walked by the dog's residence.

The officer was responding to a call at Best Motel, 257 S. 500 West, when he passed by an open door, said Provo Police Sgt. Matt Siufanua.

"The animal, unprovoked ... ran out and attacked the officer," Siufanua said.

The officer was bitten on his upper left thigh. The bite broke the skin but it was a minor injury, Siufanua said. The officer was able to bike back to work, where he was evaluated by a doctor.

After the bite, the dog backed off and a woman was able to quickly grab and restrain the dog, but was given several citations, Siufanua said.

She was cited for vicious dog, running at large and no Provo license or vaccination tags.

Siufanua said the dog was taken to the animal shelter to be quarantined for 10 days to see if it has rabies, though officers don't believe it does.

Police couldn't comment on whether the dog had bitten other people, but will be evaluating that before they give the dog back.
There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.
