FREDERICK, COLORADO — A stop of a suspected DUI driver turned into a car chase and ended with officers fighting off a pit bull near Frederick this afternoon.

An angry pit bull with a gunshot wound is still at large.

The incident involving at least four law enforcement agencies started at about 1:45 p.m. when motorists on Interstate 25 called the state patrol about a possible drunken driver, said Trooper Gilbert Mares.

A trooper soon spotted a red 1999 Ford sedan weaving and driving fast in the southbound lane. When the trooper tried to pull the driver over, he took off.

With the trooper behind him, the man pulled off 5 miles later and into a park-n-Ride on Colorado 52 in Dacono.

When the man stopped and got out, "a pit bull leaped from the driver's side window and went after the officers," Mares said.

A Frederick police officer used his Taser on the dog with little effect. The dog then charged at a Dacono officer, who shot and wounded the dog in the neck.

"He ran off west and hasn't been seen since," Mares said of the dog.

Other than the dog, no one was injured, Mares said.

Law enforcement agencies are searching for the wounded dog and have arrested the driver, Raul Sanchez, 32, of Platteville, who faces a battery of charges that have yet to be determined, Mares said.

There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.
