Wichita police answered a call about a vicious dog in northeast Wichita Wednesday and turned up what was apparently a gruesome dogfighting site.
Police said this morning the call came about 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 1500 block of North Piatty. Officers found a stray pit bull, which had attacked another dog and tracked the animal to its nearby home.
"There, they found treadmills used to train fighting dogs," said police spokesman Gordon Bassham.
Officers obtained and executed a search warrant, Bassham said, and reported they found a room apparently used to fight dogs, splattered with blood.
Police confiscated:
• Six pit bulls
• Two treadmills
• A piece of animal carcass
• A sledgehammer.
"The sledgehammer apparently was used to dispatch the dogs that lost the fight," Bassham said.
Police are looking for two suspects but have not yet made any arrests.
