Dog tags to be sold door-to-door

Uxbridge looks at ways to increase revenue
Thu Jun 26, 2008

UXBRIDGE -- Residents will likely get a knock on their door in the near future to determine if they own dogs and if they're properly tagged.

Uxbridge is looking for ways to increase revenue from dog licensing and build on a pet database, noted Clerk Debbie Leroux in a report to council June 23. To achieve this, council is considering hiring Animal Licensing Services Inc. to visit households and sell tags.

"(Township) staff are of the opinion there are many dogs... that are not being licensed and this approach would assist in ensuring people who do not buy tags are reached," reads the report.

Ms. Leroux said Township staff are stretched too thin to perform this duty themselves.

However, the hired service will come at a sizeable cost; the fees would be 66 per cent of tag sales but "this rate would be negotiable" in the future, she said. Last year, Uxbridge sold over 900 dog tags amounting to $9,092.

During the June 23 meeting, Mayor Bob Shepherd asked for the rural portion of the township to be included in the door-to-door service, with council tabling the decision to hire the company until additional costs of rural collection can be determined.

If hired, Animal Licensing Services will visit homes during evenings and weekends, according to the report. "Utilizing this service would be an opportunity for the Township of Uxbridge to increase revenues as well as providing an increased pet database, leading to an expedited and more economical return of lost pets to their owners," noted Ms. Leroux.

The clerk, who oversees animal control for Uxbridge, said if a dog is picked up for running at large, the owner can face a $130 fine plus a $25 victim surcharge. On top of that is a $25 impound fee, $10 fine for the animal not wearing a tag, and the fee to buy a tag (if needed) at $10 for an altered (fixed) dog or $20 for an unaltered canine.
