Pit bulls: Top biters in Lucas County

For the second year in a row, pit bulls were the number one biting breed of dogs that drew blood, with 66 incidents. Labs were not far behind at 53, followed by shepherds, chows and boxers, between 27 and 38 incidents, respectively.



Pit bulls were not always the top biters in the region, until 2006. The population has been rising and so has the number of bite incidents.



More than half of the 66 local victims of pit bull bites last year were children and teens.



"It affects me when a child is bitten more than anything else about this job. A child is innocent, has his whole life in front of them. Last week we had two children who are going to go through life with scars because of what pit bulls have done to them," said Tom Skeldon, the Lucas County Dog Warden.



To put some numbers into perspective - there are an estimated 5,000 pit bulls in Lucas County. They are not number one in terms of population, but they are number on in terms of biting incidents.
