DAVENPORT, FL -- A 6-year-old Davenport boy was airlifted to an Orlando hospital Monday after he was bitten on the head by a pit bull, the Polk Sheriff's Office said.
Joshua Willis was in stable condition after being flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital and was awaiting a surgeon to repair wounds he received, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.
The boy told EMS workers that he had been playing in the backyard at his grandfather's home on Varner Road in Davenport and had hit the dog on the head and was bitten, reports said.
The dog, a 2-year-old black and brown pit bull, was on a leash at the time, officials said. Animal Control took custody of the dog. The dog's owner was not identified in initial reports.
