ALBANY, N.Y. -
New York lawmakers have agreed to punish spectators at animal fights with fines up to $500 for a first offense.
The legislation, which passed the Senate by a voice vote and unanimously in the Assembly, says it's a violation to knowingly go anyplace animal fighting is staged. A second offense within five years would be a misdemeanor punishable with up to 1 year in jail and a $1,000 fine. A spokesman says Gov. David Paterson will review the law.
Sponsors called the fighting "a barbaric practice," with recent headlines showing it's still a
problem.
Dog and rooster fighting have led to arrests and confiscation of animals, including 16 pitbulls from a Bronx apartment last week and 13 roosters from a Long Island home two weeks earlier.
