FLORIDA -- A Lake County boy is recovering from injuries he sustained Sunday when he was attacked by his grandmother's dog.
Caleb Koons, 6, was at his grandmother's home in Eustis Sunday afternoon when her dog, a 5-year-old Chow-Yellow Labrador mix named Buck, bit him in the forehead and cheeks, according to an incident report. Paramedics transferred via ambulance to a landing zone, where he was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital, according to the report.
Joe Brown, a spokesman for Orlando Health, said that Caleb was treated and released.
Lake County Animal Services took the dog into custody. Rene Segraves, the organization's assistant director, said it will be quarantined for 10 days, then Caleb's grandmother, Tammy Koons, will have the opportunity to reclaim it. If she does not, the dog with be euthanized.
Segraves said that Chow-Yellow Labrador mixes can be aggressive, but that the dog, who was chained up when it bit Caleb, appeared to have lived with Koons for five years without incident.
"Who knows why it did what it did," Segraves said.
Tammy Koons declined to comment when reached by phone Monday morning.
