Infant hospitalized after dog mauling

BRYAN, Texas -- A 5-month-old baby attacked by a rottweiler while left unattended on a sofa was transferred to a Houston hospital on Wednesday with multiple injuries, Bryan police said.



Bryan police said the child's 26-year-old mother went upstairs to take a shower early Wednesday morning and returned to find the dog dragging her son around by his head. It was unclear if anyone else was home at the time.



After being taken to a hospital in Bryan, police said the baby was transferred to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. The child's condition was not immediately available.



The Bryan-College Station Eagle reported that Robert Thompson, the dog's owner and the infant's grandfather, voluntarily gave the dog up to Bryan Police Animal Control. Authorities said the dog would be euthanized.



Bryan police Sgt. Walt Melnyk said Thompson lived at the residence but was not home when the attack happened. The mother is a Waco resident who was visiting her father-in-law's home.



Melnyk told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that the investigation is continuing. He said no charges have been filed.



Mary Crist, an animal behavioral specialist at the Texas A and M College of Veterinary Medicine, said rottweilers can be good pets, but, like any dog, they should be supervised when around children.



Frank Constancio, who lives next to Thompson and shares a small chain-link fence with his neighbor, said that he and his children often played with the dog and never found it to be aggressive.



"He was a family oriented dog," he said. "He listened and rolled over on a dime. I never imagined that something like this would happen."
