On the stray/dangerous dogs issue, the chairman says he would just like for something to be done.
“We need to have an officer in place for dangerous dogs and it wouldn’t hurt for us to make some kind of decision on stray dogs,” he added.
The commission is currently considering hiring a retired law enforcement officer to handle dangerous dog cases.
The designation applies only to dogs who have attacked someone. The animal control officer goes and picks up the dog in such cases and keeps them in quarantine. The animal control officer determines whether the dog poses a danger to the public. Dangerous dogs are euthanized. If the animal is not considered a danger, it is released to its owners. Such dogs are rarely claimed because of the possibility of criminal charges and liability against the owner.
The commission has been discussing the stray dog issue for over six months with no resolution.
The county has no animal control ordinance.
