Infant hospitalized after dog mauling
BRYAN, Texas — A 4-month-old baby was hospitalized Wednesday after police say he was attacked by a rottweiler while left unattended on a sofa when his mother went upstairs to take a shower.
Police said the child's 26-year-old mother, a Waco native, returned to find the dog dragging him around by his head. It was unclear if anyone else was home at the time.
Robert Thompson, the dog's owner, voluntarily gave the dog up to Bryan Police Animal Control and authorities told the Bryan-College Station Eagle that it would be euthanized.
"It was horrible," Bryan police spokeswoman Lesley Malinak told the newspaper. "Just horrible."
Bryan police officials did not immediately respond to a phone call late Wednesday afternoon by The Associated Press.
The child was transported to St. Joseph's Regional Health Center with multiple injuries. He remained there Wednesday afternoon, but his condition was not immediately available.
Malinak said the case will be transferred to Bryan detectives, who will determine whether child endangerment charges will be filed.
