Colony dog-owners will need to make a trip to the pet store soon if they don’t already own a collar and a leash.

The Colony town council met Monday night and discussed plans to pass a leash law ordinance that would require Colony residents to keep their dogs on leashes when they are outdoors.

“We’re working on an ordinance for it now,” Colony Mayor Earlene Johnson said.

Johnson said no animal incidents have been reported to push the issue, but there have been a few minor complaints about dogs roaming loose in the community.

“There have been some dogs out around the town and we’re just trying to do something now, before it gets bad,” Johnson said. “We’d rather be safe and not be sorry.”

Though the ordinance is currently in the planning stages, Johnson said she hopes they can get it on the books as soon as possible.

The potential law will be further discussed at next month’s council meeting.

In other business, qualification fees for town office were also discussed at the meeting.

The council decided to make no change to the existing fees.

The cost to run for mayor will continue to be $50, and there will still be a $25 qualification fee to run for town council member.

“We decided to just keep it all the same,” Johnson said.
